Salt Lake City Fire Department extinguishes first major outdoor fire of the season

LOCATION: Between Victory Rd. and Beck St., and homes at 729 N. and 739 N. West Capital St.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to a reported small grass fire in the area east of Warm Springs Park and Victory Road.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes, and the flames had quickly spread and reached two vacant homes.

One home, at 729 N. was not damaged as crews were able to extinguish fire just as flames approached the edge of the home. The 739 N. residence suffered extensive damage, particularly on the south side. Damages are still being estimated.

Both homes were vacant, and had recently been listed for sale. As such, no evacuations were needed, and no civilian injuries reported.

Several other residences and an apartment complex were evacuated for a few hours while crews attended to the blaze.

About 65 SLC firefighters responded. In addition, Davis County Fire dispatched three crews and a battalion chief as mutual aid, helping respond to other emergencies in the Salt Lake City area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Much speculation was at play by onlookers at the scene. However, investigators have not released information as of yet, so they may thoroughly assess the situation.
