INCIDENT TYPE: Fire

LOCATION: 1620 W Snow Queen Place

At 02:06 on August 8th, the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1620 West Snow Queen Place. The initial fire location was on the 3rd floor of the apartment complex, and quickly spread into the roof and throughout the top floor. Initial responding crews were able to keep the fire at bay long enough for an evacuation of the building, after which the rapid fire spread dictated a defensive posture. A 2nd alarm was struck at 02:12, followed by a 3rd at 02:33. Adjacent units in the complex were also evacuated, with fire crews working to prevent extension into them. Ladder trucks were quickly placed, deploying aerial master streams to combat the fire, bringing it under control at 03:35. A total of 14 fire apparatus and 60 firefighters responded to the scene. 24 appartment units were affected to varying degrees, resulting in 40 displaced persons being assisted by the Red Cross to find shelter. There were 2 civilian injuries reported, both were treated on scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. There were no firefighter injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the dollar loss is undetermined at this time.
