It seems no two fire department hiring processes are alike. The Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD) wants to make sure you get accurate information, as it pertains to our hiring process. Here are the most common FAQ’s and our responses:
Q: I’ve heard you have to join SLCFD with basic EMT and firefighting certifications. Is this true?
A: False! You do not need any certifications prior to hiring on at SLCFD.
Q: If I’m already EMT or Paramedic certified, how do I transfer those certifications? Will those certifications help me in the hiring process?
A: If you are not Utah EMT certified, SLCFD will help you earn the correlating certification. You will need to contact the Utah Bureau of Emergency Service for assistance with transferring Paramedic certifications. You can visit https://bemsp.utah.gov/ems-personnel-licensure/ or call them at (801) 273-6666. Currently, one (1) preference point is awarded to individuals with Paramedic certification. These points are added at the very end of the hiring process.
Q: I’ve heard there are minimum height, weight, and age requirements to be a firefighter. Is this accurate?
A: SLCFD’s minimum age requirement is 18. We do not have a minimum height or weight requirement. Our firefighters come in all shapes and sizes. You do, however, have to be of sound mental and physical health. Visit www.slcfire.com/jobs and click on the “Are You Ready?” article to review those health requirements.
Q: What is the pay for SLCFD entry-level firefighters and what other benefits are offered as part of employment?
A: SLCFD’s annual salary for entry-level firefighters is approximately $40,583. Our firefighters are eligible for medical and dental insurance through PEHP, and also have the option to join the Utah Retirement System. Q: I’ve heard that SLCFD has performed lateral hiring in the past. Is there an anticipated lateral hiring process at this time?
A: SLCFD is not currently performing any lateral hiring. If and when that changes, we will notify the public via our website at www.slcfire.com.
Q: What is the overall time-line of the hiring process?
A: The employment application for the 2018 process opens January 1, 2018 and closes March 31, 2018. The written exam is currently scheduled for April 28, 2018. The oral board assessment is tentatively scheduled for June 2018. The CPAT is tentatively scheduled for July 2018. (Specific dates will be released at a later time.) Individuals who are offered employment with SLCFD will be required to complete a 15-16 week recruit school. Dates for recruit school vary based on hiring needs. Upon the successful completion of recruit school, individuals are then officially sworn-in and can anticipate a one (1) year apprenticeship within the department.
