Hiring E-Tip #2: Time to get in fighting shape

Approximately one year from today, you could be taking part in the Salt Lake City Fire Department’s CPAT. Not familiar with CPAT? “The Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) was developed to allow fire departments to obtain pools of trainable candidates who are physically able to perform essential job tasks at fire scenes.” (nationaltestingnetwork.com, 2017) The test is comprised of eight events, including: a stair climb, hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search, rescue, and ceiling breach and pull. In these events, you wear a 50lb vest to simulate the weight of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and firefighter protective clothing. The test is timed and must be completed within 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

If you have not started your fitness journey towards successfully completing the CPAT, start today! Visit https://www.nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/cpat_info.cfm for more details on each test event. In some cases you may not be able to completely replicate an event but start small. Here are some examples:

  • Go on hikes or walks around your neighborhood with a weighted backpack (start with less weight and build up as you get stronger).
  • Begin climbing stairs daily at your place of work or a local high school stadium.
  • Go on short distance jogs (1-3 miles) to improve aerobic capacity.
